About Marc

May 4th, 2009

Hello, imageI’m Marc Wickens – I’m 26 and I work as a web
developer just outside of Reading, United Kingdom.

I’ve worked as a developer for over 4 years now, in various technologies – mostly .NET and web based. Recently I’ve started developing for mobile devices, I’m finding the shift back towards downloadable software intriguing. Objective-C is certainly a culture-shock, but that’s half the fun. While at University I studied fundamental computer science concepts and wrote a dissertation entitled: Ajax vs. Java Applets: A comparison of two architectures for building quality web applications.

I have always had a keen interest in computers and the Internet, creating my first web site back in 1998.

Of course sitting at a computer all day means I am keen to do other things in my spare time. I also enjoy climbing (see photo), playing badminton, visiting new and beautiful places as well as working out in the gym. I love listening to music, especially the Manic Street Preachers, Flaming Lips and Arcade Fire. I also love computer games and my Xbox 360, with Fallout 3 and Halo Reach eating up way too much time recently.

I started imarc.co.uk back in April 2002, it’s been through many evolutionary stages – at one time static pages, then Joomala, then I wrote my own simple CMS, and lately I’ve started using WordPress. I plan to write the occasional blog post about code I write, books I read and other thoughts that pop into my head that I feel may be of interest. Of course it works both ways, so please leave a comment if you agree, disagree or have any thoughts on my site.
